About gayxi

Gayxi.com is a privately funded startup with offices in Amstelveen, The Netherlands.
Started as a social network in April of 2005, gayxi has grown into a gay travel platform
allowing gay people to share travel experiences and recommendations of where to eat,
drink and play, home or away. In countries all around the world, people search gay
members, show travel plans, consult our city guides and share travel experiences. To
complete their next trip, gay travellers book their hotels, flights and car hire at gayxi.com.

Where did the idea for gayxi come from?

Carl Brooks grew interested in the simple idea of a resource that allowed gay people to
share their knowledge of their own city or other cities. Specifically, Carl wanted gayxi
users to be able to inform and entertain each other and wondered if there might be an
opportunity to build something compelling for this concept. The result was a prototype
website, launched in April 2005.

How does gayxi work?

First, there is the worldwide social network. Register and log in to do pretty much what
you're used to doing on other social networks. The difference is that we give you control
to help build the platform by listening to your ideas.

Second, there is our gay city guide with the hotels, bars, clubs, saunas and more, to
kick-start your next city trip. We make sure that you can add your own favourite venues
and add reviews. The reviews are often candid, blunt and honest. The way we like it.
Generally trustworthy, the reviews can be infiltrated by both owners and their enemies.
However, we do our best to reduce fraudulant reviews to keep them credible.

Why do so many people seem to like gayxi?

Simplicity has played an important role in gayxi's success. Gay travellers and local gay
residents are eager to connect with each other and gayxi makes that simple:
- The gayxi social network lets you add travel plans and share them with other members.
- The gayxi city guide asks"Where to go?" and "What to do?" and displays results.

We don't pretend to be anything else but human with all its cracks, bumps and uniqueness.
We know that the people who add a profile to our social network and visit our gay guide
listings are the same people who report a spelling mistake or a dead link on our website.
And we're very grateful for that.

How is gayxi built?

Gayxi's core technology is a SQL database with social networking features. By accepting
new venues & reviews and linking them to a member profile, gayxi makes it easy for people
to share their experiences.

Our engineering team works with a PHP and SQL. Our web site and user interface were
designed using Dreamweaver and Photoshop.

Gayxi was funded initially by Carl's own savings. The first prototype was built in four months
in April 2005 and launched publicly in September of 2005. The service grew popular very
quickly and plans to add a gay city guide were implemented.

How does gayxi make money?

Gayxi generates revenue from ads and advertisors and ploughs it all back into developing
and maintaining the site. So we spend more than we make. We are looking at providing
some new services soon to gay businesses which we hope will be mutually rewarding.
Sorry - dogs got to eat.

What is next for gayxi?

We continue to follow user behavior and pay close attention to your ideas. We are also very
much guided by our philosophy of keeping things simple and intuitive so we like to restrain
ourselves with regard to features. That being said, our members seem to be calling for more
interesting ways to share experiences with one another, to organize themselves and their
updates into a central display of live feeds - we're paying attention to these requests.
